Bits and Pieces

Now that I have your attention!
Ha so good and soo bad... this was taken at the Chickenburger in Bedford. An institution that's been going strong  since 1940! I love onion rings but try my best to stay away:)

Next up is this!  A Show of COSTUME in Honor of His Royal Highness Prince Arthur, The Military Ball of 1869. Tickets available HERE It is my daughter's graduating class event! She chose to create a gown for Fanny Westphal McNab, who married Sydenham Howe (Joe Howe's son). They had to research the person, write a paper and create an historically accurate outfit from undergarments outer garments using historically accurate materials. She had to make the patterns too! They each model the gowns they created and......with their partners they will dance a Viennese Waltz for us! Exciting!

These two paintings of mine are available at Made in the Maritimes Artisan Boutique  in Bedford. I will be switching them out soon so if you are interested, pop out and see the shop, it is full of gorgeous things! (in Sunnyside Mall)

I've been reading a lot about happiness and focus lately. Alan Watts argued that the root of our human frustration and daily anxiety is our tendency to live for the future, which is an abstraction. To be truly happy,we have to live here and now because that is all that exists. We all know this, don't we. He writes:
The “primary consciousness,” the basic mind which knows reality rather than ideas about it, does not know the future. It lives completely in the present, and perceives nothing more than what is at this moment. The ingenious brain, however, looks at that part of present experience called memory, and by studying it is able to make predictions. These predictions are, relatively, so accurate and reliable (e.g., “everyone will die”) that the future assumes a high degree of reality — so high that the present loses its value.
But the future is still not here, and cannot become a part of experienced reality until it is present. Since what we know of the future is made up of purely abstract and logical elements — inferences, guesses, deductions — it cannot be eaten, felt, smelled, seen, heard, or otherwise enjoyed. To pursue it is to pursue a constantly retreating phantom, and the faster you chase it, the faster it runs ahead. This is why all the affairs of civilization are rushed, why hardly anyone enjoys what he has, and is forever seeking more and more. Happiness, then, will consist, not of solid and substantial realities, but of such abstract and superficial things as promises, hopes, and assurances.
The real reason why human life can be so utterly exasperating and frustrating is not because there are facts called death, pain, fear, or hunger. The madness of the thing is that when such facts are present, we circle, buzz, writhe, and whirl, trying to get the “I” (ourselves) out of the experience. We pretend that we are amoebas, and try to protect ourselves from life by splitting in two. Sanity, wholeness, and integration lie in the realization that we are not divided, that man and his present experience are one, and that no separate “I” or mind can be found.
To understand music, you must listen to it. But so long as you are thinking, “I am listening to this music,” you are not listening.

Passion Planner....

I was sitting in one of my favourite cafes a month ago and at the table next to me was a woman sitting chatting to her partner. In front of her, open and full of intriguing slashes of colour and written words and columns and open space, and squares and lines, was a journal;  the journal/day planner of my dreams! I couldn't help myself and leaned over to ask where she had found it. I have been looking for a planner like that all my life!
She was not offended by my interruption, in fact she beamed and handed it over as if passing a sacred object from one acolyte to another. "Yes, I understand, I know, isn't it perfect!"
She proceeded to tell me she bought it from a Kickstarter Campaign Angela Trinidad had created so she could produce the perfect tool for living a productive, organized and creative life. Yes! It was so wildly successful that Angela began donating a free planner to someone needy for every one she sold. I went home and ordered two. One for me and one for a friend. My production road map starts today!

Radically alive....

We are radically alive in our simple moments. We stay busy, tell ourselves stories. What does it mean to be alive? We breathe, we breathe......
We gaze out from the fortress of ourselves and scan the world. Judge it. Assess. Is it just enough? Is it wanting? Is it safe? Is it beautiful? Shall we step out and embrace or retreat back into the protective shell fashioned by our experience, beliefs and fear.

I adore this poem by Mary Oliver...perfect....

I know, you never intended to be in this world.
But you’re in it all the same.
So why not get started immediately.
I mean, belonging to it.
There is so much to admire, to weep over.
And to write music or poems about.
Bless the feet that take you to and fro.
Bless the eyes and the listening ears.
Bless the tongue, the marvel of taste.
Bless touching.
You could live a hundred years, it’s happened.
Or not.
I am speaking from the fortunate platform
of many years,
none of which, I think, I ever wasted.
Do you need a prod?
Do you need a little darkness to get you going?
Let me be as urgent as a knife, then,
and remind you of Keats,
so single of purpose and thinking, for a while,
he had a lifetime.

Learn the dance.....

All we get is just one chance
Time is short so learn the dance
Don't look back you'll see what's gone
Life doesn't care if you're right or wrong
Running out of days to learn who's won. -S.Duffett
These pictures are all taken in the upper meadow at Mount Saint Vincent University. Once upon a time there was a Nunnery here. It is a beautiful place with an unusual energy.
Now it has all gone back to nature.
I walk here frequently...
In all kinds of weather... times of day...
Different seasons...
New flowers appearing

pushed out by others .....
Ha, that`s life for ya
Hidden treasures...
Soft space.....
Open space..
Sheltered space...
Moody space...
A sanctuary  in the heart of the city...

All we get is just one chance
Life is short so learn the dance
Travelin highways of life too fast
Make your decisions and hope for the best
Reaching for dreams, leaving the rest.
Rolling your dice in an urn full of ash. -S.Duffett

Shelagh`s Easy Red Lentil Doldrum Defeating Dhal Soup!

Ha how's that for a title! Yesterday it started to rain and was very dreary and dark. I was hungry, cold, feeling low and wanted to brighten my day so I decided to use the warm colours and flavours of the East to perk myself up!  It had to be quick because I had work to do. This is what I came up with and it was really tasty :)

Shelagh's Easy Red Lentil Doldrum Defeating Dhal Soup!

Combine everything in a heavy pot....
Cover and simmer until all is soft, about 20 min.
Add a splash of lemon juice to brighten it up when done. And some zest if you like.

4 cups veggie broth
1 large onion chopped finely
2 medium carrots chopped finely
1.5 cups red lentils, rinsed
3 cloves of garlic minced or 1T garlic powder
1T cumin
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 Inch of fresh ginger, grated
1 bay leaf
(You could add some chilli flakes, I like to squirt in Siracha after)

An important spice in Dhal is cumin.I love it`s earthy deep warm flavour.
Tip: I keep my fresh ginger in the freezer, in a baggie, lasts forever. I take it out and grate what I need. No need to peel, it kind of flakes off on to the top of the rasp.
It was yummy and absolutely brightened up my dull day. Hard to take a good pic of dhal soup but here is my bowl with a generous splat of Siracha hot sauce:) Cha Cha Cha!

Uncharted Waters....

“I find focus in the darkest of days, and focus in the brightest. I do not judge the universe.”-Dalai Lama  So hard to do but so necessary.

Definition of hope:
1. A feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen.
2. The feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best
3. To desire with expectation of obtainment
4.  Desire accompanied by expectation of or belief in fulfillment
5. The feeling of wanting something to happen and thinking that it could happen
6  A feeling  that something good will happen or be true

Hope..... what a wonderful thing...
Can you effect the outcome in anyway? No? Then do not hope, it will only take away from you. Stop thinking about it and move forward.

Can actions you take turn the tide toward you? Yes? Then hope and act!  Mixing focus with positive emotion can create positive action and change.

Not everything is within our control and not every hoped for outcome is a possibility but we should always hope for brighter futures, no matter how unlikely, as long as there is a CHANCE. Be realistic, know what can or can't be. Some situations cannot be shifted but if there is a chance they could be....direct your focus, energy and emotions towards your desire and you will be motivated to take action. Action is what will get you there. Hope is the tool we use to motivate ourselves. Action is the magic wand.

“We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” - Martin Luther King Jr.

Lawrencetown Studio Day!

Yesterday, February 29, I took advantage of the warmth of the day and scooted out to my pal Daina's house in Lawrencetown for some painting and chin wagging.
She has a lovely bright studio next to her house (my dream) and we spent a great morning immersed in colour and chat! And yes, we actually got some work done:)

Daina works in oils primarily and I work with acrylics. They dry fast and clean up easily with water. Easy peasy.
While waiting for the paint to dry on my larger piece, I would work on a smaller one and switch between them.
We took a break for lunch. PB and banana sandwiches and cappuccino ! Tried to sit outside but it wasn't quite warm enough. Ha after all it WAS Feb 29 but what an amazing day!

She lives 2 minutes from the beach.

We took advantage of the mild weather and headed out for a post lunch walk on Conrad Beach.
It was windy and salty and wild and wonderful!
 Signs of life:)
Love the colours in mussel shells!!
It is about a half hour drive from Halifax, just before Lawrencetown beach. A tiny sign that says Conrad Road is all the warning you get:) You walk along a boardwalk to get to it. (note: It is under re-construction at the moment)
“Hark, now hear the sailors cry,
smell the sea, and feel the sky
let your soul & spirit fly, into the mystic...”
 -Van Morrison
Back to the car we headed, tired and energized. Physically weary but emotionally high!
I had a wonderful creative and soul filling day, thanks Daina! xo

Leap Day 2016!

What will we do with our extra day? Monty's day started with a wonderful surprise:) Look who discovered the feeder!
It is a beautiful mild day today, this last day of February. A gift. I plan to go for a long walk in the park before starting work.  Hope you do something good for yourself today!

A Room with a View

I love the view from this window. Not my window, but a place I have spent many happy hours.
“Set wide the window. Let me drink the day.”-Edith Wharton
This is the month of February! Where is the snow? I am glad of its absence. A temporary reprieve.....

Windows, a chance to glimpse something beyond where we are now. Does it beckon? Does it turn you away? Does it fill you with longing? Does it invoke memory? We look out; we look in.....
I'm feeling very introspective today:)
I scarcely remember counting upon any happiness - I look for it if it be not in the present hour, - nothing startles me beyond the moment. The setting sun will always set me to rights, or if a sparrow come before my window, I take part in its existence and pick about the gravel.- John Keats
